Your Brain has a Focus Signal. Attune Reads It
About the Method
Closed-Eyes Visual Attention Meditation (CEVAM)

What to Expect in a Session
Sit comfortably and close your eyes
Tune in to the dark visual space behind your eyelids
Let go of thoughts and gently observe subtle textures, shapes, or light within
Receive real-time feedback through sound or music your brain is guiding your meditation
End with clear insights into how long you stayed focused and when your mind wandered
Relaxation with Alpha-Up Neurofeedback
Rather than concentrating attention inward, the Alpha-Up protocol encourages you to let go of effort, allowing thoughts to drift and the mind to settle. As your alpha activity increases, Attune provides subtle auditory cues to reinforce this shift toward deep relaxation.
With consistent training, this protocol helps your brain access relaxed states more easily—providing objective confirmation that you have actually unwound, not just sat still. It is ideal for winding down, reducing stress, or finding a moment of calm backed by your own neural data.

To use Attune, you’ll need the BrainBit
EEG headband
Attune specifically uses the two occipital electrodes (at the back of the head) to monitor your alpha brainwave activity, which plays a key role in the CEVAM method.
The BrainBit connects seamlessly to the Attune app via Bluetooth. It’s comfortable to wear, requires no gel or sticky electrodes, and delivers high-quality EEG signals in just seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Attune unique?
Attune uses real‑time EEG to detect a robust neural correlate of mind‑wandering vs. focus: occipital alpha power with eyes closed. With our CEVAM method (Closed‑Eyes Visual Attention Meditation), you get immediate audio feedback the moment your attention drifts. We also include an Alpha‑Up Neurofeedback protocol to train relaxation.
How does Attune measure focus and relaxation?
Attune records EEG from O1 and O2 (back of the head).
- CEVAM (focus): When you keep your eyes closed and actively attend to visual experience (the “dark field”), occipital alpha power drops. We interpret that drop—relative to your eyes‑closed baseline—as increased focus.
- Relaxation protocol: Here, we do the opposite—higher alpha with eyes closed is rewarded as a marker of relaxed wakefulness.
Your Alpha Factor (eyes‑closed alpha ÷ eyes‑open alpha) from the baselines ensures we can measure both reliably.
Do I need a BrainBit headband?
Yes. Attune requires the BrainBit headband to capture the EEG signals we use for feedback.
Has Attune been tested?
Yes. The CEVAM method is based on a pilot study showing large, immediate alpha decreases during focused visual attention with eyes closed for most participants. We’re actively extending validation with larger samples and longitudinal outcomes.
Is Attune suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. The app adapts difficulty automatically, provides clear instructions, and you can start with shorter sessions (10–15 min).
When should I meditate?
- CEVAM / Focused Attention: Preferably morning or afternoon (not too sleepy).
- Relaxation (Alpha‑Up): Great for late afternoon or evening to unwind.
