Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Attune unique?
Attune uses real‑time EEG to detect a robust neural correlate of mind‑wandering vs. focus: occipital alpha power with eyes closed. With our CEVAM method (Closed‑Eyes Visual Attention Meditation), you get immediate audio feedback the moment your attention drifts. We also include an Alpha‑Up Neurofeedback protocol to train relaxation.
How does Attune measure focus and relaxation?
Attune records EEG from O1 and O2 (back of the head).
- CEVAM (focus): When you keep your eyes closed and actively attend to visual experience (the “dark field”), occipital alpha power drops. We interpret that drop—relative to your eyes‑closed baseline—as increased focus.
- Relaxation protocol: Here, we do the opposite—higher alpha with eyes closed is rewarded as a marker of relaxed wakefulness.
Your Alpha Factor (eyes‑closed alpha ÷ eyes‑open alpha) from the baselines ensures we can measure both reliably.
Do I need a BrainBit headband?
Yes. Attune requires the BrainBit headband to capture the EEG signals we use for feedback.
Has Attune been tested?
Yes. The CEVAM method is based on a pilot study showing large, immediate alpha decreases during focused visual attention with eyes closed for most participants. We’re actively extending validation with larger samples and longitudinal outcomes.
Is Attune suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. The app adapts difficulty automatically, provides clear instructions, and you can start with shorter sessions (10–15 min).
When should I meditate?
- CEVAM / Focused Attention: Preferably morning or afternoon (not too sleepy).
- Relaxation (Alpha‑Up): Great for late afternoon or evening to unwind.
How long should a session be?
Start with 10–20 minutes for CEVAL/Focused Attention and 10–20 minutes for Relaxation. Increase duration as you stabilize performance.
How often should I train?
Aim for 3–5 sessions per week. Consistency matters more than long, infrequent sessions.
What is the Alpha Factor and why do I need baselines?
The Alpha Factor (eyes‑closed alpha ÷ eyes‑open alpha) must be ≥ 1.5 to ensure we can distinguish focus from mind‑wandering robustly. Your two baseline recordings (1 min EO, 4 min EC) define that “playing field”.
My Alpha Factor is below 1.5 - what now?
Low Alpha Factors often reflect poor sleep, high arousal/stress, or suboptimal signal quality.
- Try again after good sleep.
- Practice the Relaxation protocol for several sessions to raise eyes‑closed alpha.
- Re‑run baselines afterward.
What ages can use Attune?
Attune is designed for users 9+. Younger users should only train under guidance of a parent/caregiver.
Can I use Attune offline?
You can start sessions offline, but results sync and backup only when you’re online.
How do I pair the BrainBit headband?
Turn on BrainBit → open Attune → Devices → select your headband. Make sure Bluetooth is on and the headband isn’t paired to another app.
I’m not getting a good EEG signal - what can I do?
Ensure firm electrode–scalp contact, avoid hair products, gently press/wiggle electrodes, or use the wet sponges that come with BrainBit. Lying back on a pillow is fine if contact is maintained.

Is my data private and secure?
Yes. We follow GDPR and other applicable privacy regulations. See our Privacy Notice in the app and on the website for full details.
Can I listen to my own music?
Yes. You can switch feedback off and play your own music. For CEVAM, many users prefer feedback only when the mind wanders (volume decreases with focus).
Does Attune work with other EEG headbands?
Not at the moment. Attune is optimized and validated for BrainBit O1/O2 recordings.
